A journey to the Dominican Republic …

The good news of the gospel encompasses both spiritual and social realities.  So, in response to God’s love for us in Jesus Christ, a mission team of ten individuals from the congregation went to the Dominican Republic under the auspices of ‘International Child Care’ and ‘Powertrips’ (www.powertripsinc.org) to serve in Haitian communities struggling with issues of extreme poverty.   We were daily challenged to reflect on the following verse. “He has shown you, O man, what is good.  And what does the Lord require of you?  To act justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8)

Project funds raised by St. Andrew’s were spent on materials to build a cinder block clinic / adult education center in the Haitian village of Ascension among Spanish, French and Creole speaking residents.  Team members joined in shovelling gravel for the cement floor, raising the walls by piling blocks, painting, and preparing rebars for the construction site.

While here, other team members provided English Second Language lessons to interested adults and spent time teaching and caring for these precious children who live in constant hunger.

We also distributed several large duffle bags of supplies collected by many generous donors to different locations during our stay.  Here’s where they ended up.

Medical supplies and packets of personal hygiene items were taken to Hospital Ricardo Limardo in Puerto Plata where patients in wards of  8 – 10 people are required to pay for everything.  They have to supply their own bedding and food and may wait several days before being seen by a doctor.

School supplies and shoes were given to a Christian mission school in Aguas Negras, a very poor area on the outskirts of the city which had just experienced a major flood.  Some of these people had even lost homes into the rushing river.

Children’s clothing, underwear, formula, and baby supplies were left in Ascension to be used by Sue and Jim Coates, (www.dominicanministry.com ), providing ongoing care to infants and children at risk.

Stuffed toys were given out to small children in Poncho Mateo during a ‘milk ministry’ with Dominican Crossroads Ministries (www.dominicancrossroads.com) where zip lock bags filled with a bun, a piece of salami, a boiled egg, and a toothbrush and toothpaste were given alongside a cup of milk from a farmer’s can.

Bars and bars of perfectly wrapped soap retrieved from the dump in Perth were handed out to people living in a dump outside Puerto Plata with whom we shared a time of fellowship and also distributed salami, buns, and granola bars from the duffle bags.

Since our return, we have begun to sponsor an infant at risk, are making bedrolls to be given to those who sleep on dirt floors, are collecting shoes, and will be collecting funds to be used for a project such as purchasing property to construct a safe play area for the school in Aguas Negras.

Mission begins and ends with worship.  It also begins at home … but it doesn’t end there.

In preparation for the mission trip, and provide the congregation with opportunities to share in the adventure, these are some of the events that took place to raise the required funds.

Eleven Duffle Bags filled with clothing, hygiene and medical supplies as well as toys and sports equipment to be distributed in the Dominican Republic.  The congregation was invited to share in this and the response was beyond generous!

Lunches:  Beginning in December 2005, theme luncheons were held, with a “Toonie for a Tune” as entertainment.  There was no charge but free will donations were received with gratitude.

Let The Spirit Soar a musical evening by “The Good News Company” who donated the proceeds.

Sanctified:  a CD of their own music by Heather Savage and Tricia Crabb, with the help of our youth band, “Sanctified” including Jen Cosens, Marcy Vincent & Corey Crabb.  All proceeds were donated.

Giant Yard Sale:  In August 2006, a yard sale was held in the yard of Doug and Bonita Austin

Talent Night:  A fun event held in spring, 2006, again with free will donations.

Barbecue:  Hamburgers and Hot Dogs at the Grocery store.

Donations:
The Women’s Missionary Society gave a very generous donation which was gratefully received and put the fund raising project just slightly over the top.

Many local business and professionals also gave generously.

Quilt and Craft Fair On September 30 a “Quilt and Craft Fair was held in the church hall.  There was a great spirit of sharing of talents, it was well attended, and many items were purchased.  It was a great financial success.  “Sosua” Tea Room was elegant and was well patronized.   “Sosua” is the name of the Hotel in the Dominican Republic, where the team will be staying.
